With the probability of a huge landfill staring us in the face and the spill of 8,800 gallons of diesel fuel in to the lake, it became evident that we needed to increase our training and equipment to handle hazardous materials incidents in town. At that time, the town had just purchased Rescue 2 and our old heavy rescue still needed to be replaced. So we knew that once again we would be on our own to provide a vehicle to hold the equipment and respond to haz-mat calls. Through the generosity of a local person that works for the Pepsi Cola company, we were able to obtain a used beverage truck at no cost to the town. We went to work with the skills that our members possess as well as our fund raising activities and donations from local companies. Bay Path Vocational High School metal shop was a huge asset in the process also. After about a year, we put the truck into service in 1993. It has been serving us well and we have come to realize that it was defenitly a piece of apparatus that the town needed. The truck serves 3 purposes: Haz-mat response, high pressure air refills for firefighting and SCUBA tanks, and a command post. The truck responds to all calls for leaks or spills of hazardous materials and is an intergal part of our response to "suspicious packages" with the recent scare of terrorism upon us. It also responds to working fires, scuba calls, lost persons, and any other time there is a need to contain hazardous materials, supply air or set up a command post.
This vehicle was replaced in early 2004.
